The power of speech is incredible. I believe that if you can defeat someone using only words or simple will power, than it is much harder than just using pure strength. Politicians, presidents, leaders around the world use only words to motivate and move people everywhere.
When these people speak, they have the power to change the way you are thinking to guide your train of thoughts towards the way they want it to go. They have the power to capture your attention, go inside your head and shuffle through your thoughts. They have the power to inspire you, to bring out your emotions, to make sparks fly inside your heart.
I think that if someone can be able to grasp the full power of speech, than he/she is much stronger, and more dangerous than anyone who uses physical strength.
Usually for speakers nowadays, their main job is to persuade you, inspire you, and some times even to entertain you. I find that in speeches, it is hardest for me is to do the "entertaining" part.
My dad always said that the best way to start a speech is to tell a joke. It doesn't necessarily have to be related, just something to grab the audiences' full attention. I think it is called the "hook".
Unfortunately I am someone who has a lack of humour. I just don't like to make jokes and stuff, it is not like I am dead serious, I just have a different kind of humour. My kind of humour is the crazy stories, playing with words kind of humour. So when writing a speech I find it hardest to include a joke that is short and is easy for other people to understand.
Speeches are something I have to work on, I believe it is a very valuable skill in the future and will be tested on a very daily bases.
Even though today I didn't get elected for secretary at Debate Club, I think I will try again next year. It was a great experience, and really hope that one day, I can learn to use the power of speech too.
