Cassel comes from a family of curse workers — people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they’re all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn’t got the magic touch, so he’s an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail — he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.
Ever since, Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts crumbling when he starts sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He’s noticing other disturbing things, too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him, caught up in a mysterious plot. As Cassel begins to suspect he’s part of a huge con game, he also wonders what really happened to Lila. Could she still be alive? To find that out, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen. – Goodreads
MY COMMENTS
The first time I saw this book I was at a Chapters. That day the author of The Mortal Instruments Cassandra Claire, with the author of The Curse Worker Series Holly Black were having a book signing at the Chapters in Metrotown.
Me and my friends loved the Mortal Instruments, and because my friend could not make it that day, she asked if I would go to the book signing for her and sign our books.
So that day after school I got to Chapters at around 6:00. There was SO MUCH PEOPLE. At that time I haven't read The Curse Workers yet, but because of the book signing I decided to get a book. I mean you don't get to see awesome writers everyday, so I thought, why not?
That day I got home at 12 am in the morning, me and my cousin waited for 6 whole hours just to get the books signed. I got Holly Black's signature, but because I didn't read the book yet there wasn't any special feeling...
After about a week I had ran out of books to read, and saw White Cat lying on my book shelf, so I took it and started reading.
Books NEVER cease to amaze me.
And this book was beyond amazing.
The book seem to be travelling between conscious and unconscious, truth and lies, dreams and illusions. You never seemed to know what was really happening until towards the end.
It kept me dangled in the air, because I couldn't decided if Cassel's brothers were good or bad? Was his memory real or fake? Was it reality, or just another con? It felt like Cassel's world was being ripped apart piece by piece, and with each piece he discovers more about who he really is, and in this case what he really is.
Other than the beautiful suspense, there was also the cons. I find cons very interesting, a con is when you make others do something that you want without them knowing it. It involves lots of planning, scheming, and observations. You probably also need wits, and some acting skills.
I enjoyed how the author portrait Cassel. Cassel has very strong powers, but he doesn't know them. He is a criminal, but he doesn't remember what he did. He has a family who would stab him in the back for their own purposes, yet he managed to find himself.
Cassel is also very smart, more like witty. But because of his natural differences, he can't live a normal life. Because of who he is, what family he comes from, people might dislike him or distrust him. People tend to isolate those who are different, only because they fail to get along.
I REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK.
It is still one of my favourite teen books, and the second book Red Glove is very good too. The third book Black Heart is coming out next year, and I can't wait to read it.
I am really lucky to have gotten a signature from Holly Black herself, I just regret I hadn't read the book sooner, the whole thing would have meant a lot more.
